Challenger Breaks 40% in New Hampshire Primary, Causes Winner to Quit the Race

Not yesterday, of course, but 1968, when Eugene McCarthy's 42% led Lyndon Johnson to withdraw from seeking reelection. Another interesting detail: The first-in-the-nation primary was held on March 12.

He Hated Losing that is why he backed out of Election Race. that was major reason for withdrawal.

I suppose a sitting president is different than a former one.

"statesmanlike need to try to start Vietnam peace talks" LBJ?? LOL

Another reason for LBJ's withdrawal, besides McCarthy's 42% and the statesmanlike need to try to start Vietnam peace talks and keep them out of politics, was that Robert F. Kennedy (the good one) had gotten into the race. Johnson hated losing, but he would have hated losing to Bobby Kennedy worse than just about anyone.

LBJ was a write in candidate as well.
