Now for something completely different

What is the "story" being told in this ad? (This is in heavy rotation in Miami)

Wow anon, to paraphrase The Dude, doesn’t all that nihilism and cynicism exhaust you to tears? I got fatigued just reading that one sentence comment.

To follow up on what Prof. K. said, I think the 2021 update—the “what” of the tag line—is reflected both in the single mom aspect and the fact of it being a multiracial couple.

I’m treating a non’s comment as dry humor, which inspired a chuckle.

Publix’s corporate strategy must be working considering how much discussion was prompted by a short, innocuous ad. We’re all helpless to avoid being dominated by Big Grocery!

It's obvious: the man is meeting his child-bride-to-be.

Publix is taking a radically transgressive approach - as any grocery store must these days.

If family is anything you make it, it seems like family as a concept is pretty meaningless.

The first time we watched, we interpreted it as the woman was a social worker, he was considering adopting the girl, and this was some kind of home visit. The second time, we read it as he was dating the woman and meeting her daughter for the first time. The woman gives him an affectionate touch on his shoulder as she enters. My wife is a social-work educator and she agreed that is not something they teach social workers to do.

Great ad. What kotodama said. It's the classic commercial about the super-important dinner that a person is cooking, that's really important to get right, but updated for 2021.

Seems like it. I guess the twist is that, instead of meeting the mom for the first time, this is the first time she’s bringing her daughter over. And the likely tie in with “family” is that presumably he and the mom have been dating for a while now, to the point that she’s comfortable with introducing her daughter and letting the boyfriend start playing more of a dad role. Finally there’s a play on “make it” between figuratively making a family and the guy’s literally making the meal for them to eat. (I love potato gnocchi, so good choice there.)

I think he's dating her mom
