Some necessary background

Greetings again, prawfs readers.  It's been a while since I posted in this space.  Partly that is because I've been standing up another blog (more soon on that front).  But partly it's because I didn't know how to write this post.

I am very late to the memorial service, so let me keep this short.  Some people knew Danny better, but not many here knew him longer.  We met in 1991, in a rainstorm, in a somewhat dry corner between Thayer and Mem Church.  He was, already, a confident kid, and yeah, he let you know that, even standing for a few minutes under an oak waiting for the squall to pass.

Belief in yourself, in your ideas, is not an unmixed blessing.  But it is a blessing.  Writing is a constant battle with overcaution, censors and judgments internal and out.  Spend the formative years of your writing career with someone as fearless, as willing to engage in every argument, and you start to see that the censors can be beaten.  What's the worst they can do to you?  Life, too.  Build institutions, keep asking for ridiculous commitments from friends and strangers.  They say no.  Ask again.  Dance a silly shabbat dinner dance.  Hug unreservedly. Not everything was to emulate (especially that dance).  But most of these were gifts.

Ok, sorry, you didn't expect that, these months on. It's a little misty here in typepad studio.   I'll stop.

So listen, the rest of my time, it's going to be about stupid stuff.  Law reviews, self-promotion, the usual.  For good or bad, it's the nature of this place.  A little kbitzing, a little humble brag.  A place to find people, find their work, engage it.  What he wanted?  I don't know.  But my best approximation.

Thanks, Brian. And I assure you, yours isn't the tardiness memorial. Mine is coming in June.
