The emergence of political hate

An interesting take on hyper-partisanship and deeper political commitments from Keith Humphreys at RBC. But is he right about this being a new phenomenon? I am not so sure.

People hated Lincoln so much they tried to leave the country. Some of the rhetoric directed against, say, Jefferson or Andrew Jackson or FDR was as hateful and hate-filled as anything directed at Clinton, GWB, or Obama, or that will be directed at Hillary. And as for the niche press, the image of the impartial press dates, at the earliest, to the mid-19th century. If we go back to the Founding, there was a Federalist press and an Anti-Federalist press and the lines between them were clear and the rhetoric emerging from them was hostile much in the way Keith describes--that is why John Adams wanted the Alien and Sedition Acts.

Was it hatred of Lincoln that drove them to disband their political ties to the north?

Or was it apprehension that 1/2 of the assets of the unitd stats in terms of dollar value would be emancipated by Lincoln and given the right to vote against the former owners?

It wasn't moral position to hold, but damn if it was rational as hell.

Now what we've seen with Reagan Bush1 Clinton GWB and Obama is different in kind.

There was all sorts of insane vitriol leveled at Reagan and Bush1, and then Clinton got it returned in spades, because the man was essentially a neoliberal republican. I still can't fathom how liberals support his presidency and proclaim that it was the greatest one since FDR. Clinton repealed Glass-Steagall at the behest of Citibank and created these behemoths. He also ended birth to grave welfare. he's the guy that said the era of big governemnt is kaput. anyway the republicans still hated his guts. GWB got it even worse from unhinged democrats. they stil refuse to acknowledge that taking fracking out the EPAs purview is the only thing that has the country thriving while the rest of the world wallows in the muck.

and honestly, obama has proven to be just as awfuls the psychos on the right said he would be - which is shocking. he's a man driven by his egomania. if what he promised eve came true, its just pure serendipity. the man cares not one lick about honesty. he took the white house out of the FOIA loop the other day. wtf.

Perhaps political hate can be justified by today's originalism in the content/context of the 1787 Constitution. And political hate in the Court can be seen in CJ Marshall's opinion in Marbury v. Madison.
