End of Times?
Had I not just finished reading Paul Boyer's fascinating book When Time Shall Be No More: Prophecy Belief in Modern American Culture, I probably would have missed this notable news item. Dead birds falling from the sky by the thousands? Really? Wtf? Where are we on the Homeland Security Advisory Color Wheel? Is this a time for the exercise of emergency executive powers? Supersonic weapons testing? Or does God no longer love America? Seriously, though....5,000 birds fell out of the sky? Help me to know why....

Nice end of time reference.
Presuming you truly want your question answered, I offer this. NPR had a report yesterday (day before?) that the birds in question have terrible night vision, which caused the doom. Apparently they were roosting after dark in the Arkansas town on New Years' Eve when something sounding like a canon was shot off several times. In flying from their perch, the birds kept running into things branches and other things. The repetitive blunt trauma caused injuries to their internal organs ultimately causing their falling from the skies. As Ripley said, believe it or not.
