Come on, Jason. The idea that a tiny pilot program, in a locality with completely dysfunctional (though well funded) public schools, for low-income kids, is an effort to "kill public education" is just silly. Besides, a primary reason why vouchers have not caught on outside of urban centers is precisely because comfortable Republican suburbanites like their public schools just fine.

This is very unfortunate. The impulse of NCLB is commendable, even if the implementation has been a disaster. Why punish children for the ideological commitments of politicians? It stands to reason: if competition is a valuable force in social life, why not use credits to allow those who are less fortunate to have a competitive vote on public schools?
