So long, and best music of 2008?

Thanks to Dan and the gang for inviting me to guest in December.  It's been fun as always.

Before I go, I will, as I have in the past, solicit suggestions for cool music done in the past year.  I'm too old to even pretend to be hip anymore, so I rely on the advice of others.  My taste tends to run in the "alternative rock" genre, but tips of good music of any kind would be welcome, individual songs or CDs.

To start things off, here are five CDs that came out in 2008 that I enjoyed (in no particular order):

"Accelerate" -- REM

"The Cross-Eyed Rambler" -- Paul Heaton

"Just Us Kids" -- James McMurtry

"Distortion" -- The Magnetic Fields

"Dig, Lazurus, Dig!" -- Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.

Happy New Year to all.

I second two of Michael Cahill's fine suggestions:

"Third" -- Portishead
"Vampire Weekend" -- Vampire Weekend

I have four additional recommendations:

"Dear Science" -- TV on the Radio
"The Airing of Grievances" -- Titus Andronicus
"Fleet Foxes" -- Fleet Foxes
"Hercules and Love Affair" -- Hercules and Love Affair

The last two recommendations aren't what I would call "alternative rock," but I'm an alternative rock fan and I like them.

"Death Magnetic", Metallica.
"Raising Sand," A. Krauss & R. Plant.
"One Kind Favor", B.B. King.
"Jim", Jamie Lidell.
"Low on Cash", Eric Lindell.

Does "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" count? The Carpenters version? Because I know it wasn't released this year, but -- man! Excellent tune, and *very* thought-provoking.

My votes go to "Modern Guilt" - Beck, "Welding the C:/" - Ubiquitous Synergy Seeker, the single "Zodiac Girls" - Black Moth Super Rainbow, and "Lose Big" - Eef Barzelay.

I like the Vampire Weekend album quite a bit, and apparently so do all the critics.

I was already a big fan of Portishead and I like their new album, Third, but if you're not familiar with their music, it isn't for everyone. I'm not allowed to listen to it when my wife is around.

On the other hand, she's a big fan of the Hold Steady and likes their new album, Stay Positive, though it's not as good as their earlier ones (e.g., Boys and Girls in America).

The New Pornographers didn't release anything in the last year, but if you haven't heard them, they're great. Sort of the anti-Portishead, in that I don't see how anyone younger than my parents could fail to like their music.
