Hiring Chairs 2008-09: Announce Yourselves!

Update: Note that this will be moved periodically to the front of the page.

As is tradition here, it's time for law schools' appointments committees around the country to congregate here and share:
a) the name of the chair (s) of the committee
b) the law school
c) whether your school divides work between entry-levels and laterals, and if so, who's responsible for which segment
d) the names of other persons on the appointments committee(s)
e) any particular subject matter expertise you're focusing on
f) other information you think might be relevant.

To get the ball rolling, Mark Seidenfeld at Florida State is the chair of FSU's (unified) appointments committee. (I can't remember who else is on the committee but it includes Jim Rossi as well.) So far as I know, we have broad needs and will be looking to hire a good mixture of strong lateral and entry level candidates.

At the University of Toledo, our (unified) committee chair is Lee Pizzimenti. Other members of the committee are Dean Douglas Ray, Associate Dean Daniel Steinbock, and myself, Nicole Porter, and Kenneth Kilbert.

I am aware of particular interest in Tax, Commercial Law / Secured Transactions / UCC, and Criminal Law / Procedure, but we will consider hiring in other subjects.

Professor David Cassuto is the Appointments Committee chair at Pace Law School. Particular interest in tax and environmental law, but open to anyone with scholarly interests that match "core" (especially 1L) classes. Also the possibility of a lateral environmental hire in the case of someone newly(-ish) tenured. Professor Cassuto is the chair for both laterals and entry-level. Other members of the Committee are Luis Chiesa, Andrew Lund, Shelby Green, Barbara Atwell, Karl Coplan. Direct applications especially encouraged from people who really, really want/need to be in NYC area. No false come-ons please. We'll be clear, too.

Joe Franco is the chair of the Appointments Committee at Suffolk. I don't know offhand who else is on it.

Posted by: Jeff Lipshaw | Jun 13, 2008 11:43:13 AM

Bill Dodge is the Chair of the (unified) committee at Hastings. Although we have very pressing needs in corporate and IP, we're not limiting our search.

Posted by: Jack Bogdanski | Jun 13, 2008 4:59:48 PM

Charlotte School of Law: H. Beau Baez is the chair of a unified committee. We are looking for laterals in various areas. As a new school we need people who are flexible and willing to teach in areas needed by the law school. At Indiana-Bloomington, we have entry-level and a lateral hiring committees. The entry-level chair is Jeannine Bell. The lateral chair is Ken Dau-Schmidt. In December 2007, Indiana-Bloomington received an extraordinary grant from the Lilly Endowment for lateral hiring, and it will be a major focus of our efforts in this and coming years.

I am the chair of the Recruitment Committee at the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. Other members are Julie Davies, John Myers, Marjorie Florestal, and Mike Mireles. We handle both entry level and lateral candidates. We have a formal process (involving the entire tenure/tenure track faculty) for establishing areas of need, which does not take place until early fall. So, I cannot officially comment on what areas we will be looking for. This might be a year, however, in which we simply look for targets of opportunity, rather than focusing on particular needs.

Posted by: Franklin Gevurtz | Jun 17, 2008 1:39:52 AM

From Jack Beermann: I am Chair here at Boston University. We have a unified committee. We have four open positions to hire for. Our particularly strong subject matter needs are civil procedure, property and criminal law in the first year, and ADR, evidence, professional responsibility and trusts and estates in the upper level. We could also use more faculty in intellectual property, corporations/securities, conflicts, environmental law and commercial law. We would entertain applications from good candidates regardless of subject matter.

The committee includes myself, Daniela Caruso, Alan Feld, Andrew Kull, Gary Lawson, Linda McClain, Mike Meurer and Ken Simons as well as our Dean (Maureen O'Rourke) and Associate Dean (Gerry Leonard) ex officio.

Posted by: Jack Beermann | Jun 17, 2008 10:55:28 AM

At Wayne State University, Joan Mahoney will be chair of the committee looking for laterals, and I'll be chair of the committee looking for entry-level people. We're especially interested in folks working in intellectual property, securities/transactional, criminal law/procedure, and family law, but hope to hire in other areas as well.

At Stetson University College of Law Michael Allen and Timothy Kaye are co-chairs of a unified appointments committee. The committee's work is divided between fulltime hires (both entry level and lateral) and visitors. Professor Allen is taking the lead in fulltime hires and Professor Kaye will focus on visitors. We anticipate hiring three fulltime faculty members. Areas of interest include property, trusts and estates, constitutional law, business law, civil procedure, criminal law and professional responsibilty. The hires will likely be a mix of entry level and lateral. On the visiting front, we have needs in all the core first year courses and will be seeking a large number of visitors.

For Seton Hall:

Entry Level Chair: Timothy Glynn
Laterals Chair: Charles Sullivan

I'll also be on the entry-level committee....I don't know all the names of the others on the committees yet.

At Duke, we have two hiring committees, one for entry-level hiring and one for lateral hiring. The chair of the entry-level committee this year is Kate Bartlett, and the chair of the lateral committee is Deborah DeMott.

The University of Wisconsin's unified committee is chaired by Alta Charo, with members John Ohnesorge, Pilar Ossorio, Thomas Mitchell and (ex officio) Kathy Hendley. The school is not affirmatively searching this year and will not be going to the AALS hiring meeting. It does have identified needs in commercial law, tax law, international trade law, international economic law, critical race studies, and, to a lesser extent, criminal law, torts and property. The appointments committee will review files of those who apply directly or who are brought to its attention via special targets of opportunity, such as spousal hires, cluster hires, or other non-standard means.

I am chairing the unified hiring committee at UC Berkeley (Boalt Hall). We are especially interested in the general areas of business law (securities regulation, corporate law, tax law, commercial law, and so on), procedure (civil procedure and federal courts), health management and delivery, public law (federal courts, again, and constitutional law), environmental law (climate change), and torts, but will be happy to consider candidates with other interests. Because of the university allocation of slots, we have more hiring capacity at the junior and recently tenured level than at the senior level.

Tamara Piety is Chair of the Appointments Committee at Tulsa. Other committee members are Robert Butkin, Patience Crowder, Marla Mansfield and Robert Spoo. Because of two strong hires last year, [Assistant Professor, Carrie Griffin Basas (J.D., Harvard)(disability law) and Robert Spoo (J.D., Yale; Ph.D., Princeton) (IP/ and leading James Joyce scholar)] and the transition to dean Janet Levit (J.D., Yale; M.A., Yale)(international law), this year's committee will be focused primarily on strategic planning and does not anticipate entry level hiring. However the committee is open to reviewing candidates for junior lateral hires in all areas and welcomes expressions of interest.
