Legal Academy Look-Alikes

Fiss_owen_2Somebody at the New Law Prof Workshop turned to me and said "you really look like Owen Fiss at Yale."  Now there are some100_0638_4 significant differences between Professor Fiss and me, not the least of which is that he is a distinguished academic with a world-class resume and I am not, but more importantly, the picture at left from the Yale Law School web site appears to have been professionally taken after he had bothered to shave, dress, and not pose so that it looked like he had a double chin, things I did not bother to do or avoid when my son James snapped the picture to the right this morning.

ChurtThis, of course, caused me to think about the other look-alikes in legal academy that I've noticed recently (or not so recently).  First, it's amazing how much Christine Hurt (Illinois, left) gets done in terms of the triad of scholarship,Linney teaching, and service, in addition to blogging up a storm at Conglomerate, and raising her kids, when she also appears in movies like Breach under her stage name Laura Linney (right).

Similarly, Professor Mike Green of Wake Forest (left), a member of the AALS Greenmichael Committee on Professional Development, in an admirable expenditure of service time, spent the entire weekend as a participant in the New Law Prof workshop, even though it meant not appearing as Capt. DonaldFlorek Cragen in the next episode of Law & Order:  Special Victims Unit, where his AFTRA-registered moniker is Dann Florek.

Feel free to submit other look-alike nominations.  But be forewarned that I have already mentioned these similarities to the people involved and have not been punched out.  And I will delete any comments that are not nice.

Eric Muller bears a striking resemblance to Rainn Wilson's character on "The Office" -- Dwight Schrute

And Robert Redford, too.

UNC's Prof. Kalo = the E-Harmony founder Dr. Neil Clark Warren

(even more so on TV, they actually have similar voices too)

I totally just thought of a great one.

U. of Miami lawprof Michael Froomkin = Washington Post writer Dan Froomkin.

Dead ringer.

Which movie?

- Close Encounters of the F.3d?

- Saving Private Law?

- Raiders of the Lost or Misplaced Property?

- Minority Opinion?

Scott Sundby = the young, pre-graying Michael McDonald

Well, Mr. Lipshaw, if that is so (and I refer here to your "Peter MacNicol" reference), then explain to me why Spielberg has cast Robert Redford to play me in the Major Motion Picture of my scholarship that he's filming.

Well, there's gotta be a law prof somewhere out there who looks like James Lipton, as my daughter calls him, the "fawning sycophant."

Well, I'm beginning to think that it was no coincidence that the "Crafting a Scholarly Persona" program from the AALS Annual Mtg. "was intended roughly to mirror Bravo's Inside the Actor's Studio."

I have looked at the UNC website. Eric Muller = Peter MacNicol (the guy from Ally McBeal). Sorry, Eric. But I understand. I denied I had a bald spot for almost fifteen years.

Or maybe it is Redford. I don't know. I hear both comparisons so often.

No, wait.

Eric Muller = Ben Affleck

Eric Muller = Robert Redford

Jim Kainen (Fordham) = Larry David. This isn't a very original observation - Jim has a photo of Larry on his office door.

Alan Schwartz = Dana Carvey

Gregory Klass = Matthew McConaughey

doug baird = rick moranis

heather gerken = cate blanchett

I think he is a fantastic teacher (one of the best), but I have to say that Lewis Sargentich at HLS looks a lot like Santa Claus.
