Bush's Next Move
So -- it looks like Miers' nomination may be coming to an end. Who's next? Does the president tack to the right and choose a Michael Luttig or Edith Jones? Or, as revenge, does he pick someone even more moderate than Miers? Any guesses?

Next? Alito, Luttig, Young, Corrigan, Jones or Garza.

My dream "do-over" nominee: Alex Kozinski.
My dream semi-realistic "do-over" nominee: Michael McConnell.
My actual guess: Some reasonably conservative, reputable female appellate judge. Karen Williams if the Administration wants to take a strong conservative stance (fat chance); Edith Clement if they just want to placate the base enough that it will shut up. Clement would in fact accomplish this task, I think.
But Matt Bodie's guess in the first comment, supra, is also very plausible.

I guess my second comment above means that I can begin to guess.

Katrina makes Chertoff a non-starter. Torture memos and "soft on Roe" make Gonzales a non-starter. (Plus, he echos the crony problem.)
I think money would be better put on Larry Thompson, PepsiCo's General Counsel and an already much-discussed possibility.

I couldn't begin to guess. But I have begun to wish. I posted a note yesterday at The Conglomerate, here.

I'm jumping the gun. But given the bad reports on the senatorial visits, the gloom on her support team, the bombshell George Will editorial coming down the pike, the huge drop in her "stock" on the trading markets, and Gordon Smith's "Dear Harriet" letter, I thought it might be fun to engage in a little "what next?"

Matt, why do you say it looks as if Miers' nomination is coming to an end? Granted that the stories continue to be gloomy, but is there some breaking news I missed?

So here's my guess -- I think he chooses Alberto Gonzales or Michael Chertoff in a "tough on terror" move. Plus, as a kind of "kiss my grits" to his critics.
