Roger Ebert

Roger Ebert has died.  I was a big fan.  I wrote a brief post about his writing in 2008.  He will be sorely missed.

Terrible news. Ebert was a fantastic writer and a brilliant, plainspoken student of the human condition. His philosophy of reviewing movies also made him largely immune to the clueless viciousness demonstrated by so many modern movie critics, i.e., missing the point of a movie and criticizing it for what it did not intend to be. Where appropriate, Ebert could be (and sometimes famously was) brutal. But he blended love of film, keen observation, and sensible criticism in a way that made me prioritize his reviews above all others.
