Election Law as an Everyday Activity

Well, this is exciting.  My first foray into the PrawfsBlawg world.  I hope I don't say too many controversial things such that it becomes my last!

My Dad said something interesting to me the other day:  "when you decided to focus on election law, I thought this would be a once-every-four-years kind of thing.  But we just finished an election and there's still so much going on!"

Touche.  A couple months after the presidential election and we're already forecasting the next presidential election.  (Watch out for that Cory Booker guy...can he save a whole country through Twitter?  And are we really going to have to endure a year or more of WWHD--What Will Hillary Do?)  The Supreme Court is hearing two election law cases this Term -- one extremely important case (Shelby County) involving Section 5 of the Voting Rights Act, the other (Arizona v. Intertribal Council of Arizona) also very important, albeit less salient, about federalism, preemption, and the extent to which a state may enact procedures to root out what it perceives as fraud.  Legislatures are considering changes how they allocate Electoral College votes, although proposals in these states seem to be dead for now.

What does this say about the state of our elections?  Maybe my Dad should be right -- shouldn't the issues surrounding elections be periodic, not everyday?  I like talking about election law issues as much as the next guy (what, the rest of you don't do this all the time?), but is this really good for our country?  Sure, there's only 1379 days until the 2016 presidential election, but do we need to fill each of them talking about it?

I plan to discuss these and other issues over the next month.  For now, I'll prove my brilliance through a bold prediction:  a Harbaugh is going to win the Super Bowl on Sunday.
