"40 Years of LGBT Activism"
Just returned to snowy Connecticut from participating in Southwestern Law School's symposium, "40 Years of LGBT Activism: Taking Stock and Looking Ahead." It was a terrific day of talks by scholars and practitioners. The Honorable Lisa Ginoza of the Intermediate Court of Appeals of the State of Hawaii spoke about her career, describing herself as "out and grateful," and Dean Robert Saltzman of the USC Gould School of Law spoke about his work as a Commissioner of the LA Police Department, and efforts to make the LAPD more responsive to the needs of the LGBT community. Prof. Russell Robinson of UC Berkeley critiqued the use of images from the African-American civil rights movement in same-sex marriage litigation. Kelly Strader of Southwestern, with whom I've written about LGBT issues in the criminal punishment system, presented on work that he and his Southwestern colleague Molly Selvin are doing on LAPD sting operations targeting gay men for alleged "lewd conduct." Cynthia Lee spoke on the use of the "gay panic defense," Adele Morrison talked about diversity within the LGBT rights movement (featuring music from "Free to Be . . . You and Me"), and Gabriel Arkles led us on a visual slideshow of the gay rights movement, focusing on the perspective of trans and queer people of color. In a talk entitled [Including But Not Limited To] Violence Against Women, I made the case that 2012 represented a transition to more gender-inclusive anti-violence movements, focusing on the FBI's adoption of a gender-neutral definition of rape; the debate over the inclusion of LGBT intimate partner violence survivors in the reauthorization of VAWA; and promulgation of the DOJ Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) regulations. Keep an eye out for contributions to the symposium appearing in the Southwestern Law Review in summer 2013.
Now back to shoveling out!
