VAPs and Fellowships: Open Thread, 2011-2012

As requested, here is this year's open thread in which comments can be shared regarding news of appointments to VAPs or similar fellowships (for example, the Climenko and Bigelow).  (Here is last year's thread.)

Update: We have an aggregator! Below is the spreadsheet, which you can view and download here.

Additionally, this link will always take you to the last page of comments for this thread.

From the aggregator:

The column titles should be self-explanatory. Most columns are populated by dates, each of which may have a descriptor next to it indicating (method of notification) AND/OR [slots filled/total slots].

Dates correspond to the posting date or the date I (VAP Aggregator) received an email directly.

Reports on some programs leave outstanding questions based on the information provided. I have highlighted those in yellow in the hopes folks will provide additional info.  (Committees, you are especially encouraged to correct me if I make a mistake!)

Some programs are not running this year (either via their webpage and/or reports). I have marked those rows in gray, but preserved them to help make the spreadsheet reusable next year.

Submit any questions/comments/corrections to vapaggregator (at) gmail (dot) com.

Wash U made an offer, as did ASU.

I am a different anon who got a snail mail rejection from BU. I had applied to the general VAP program. And, I can confirm that it was a very nice letter.

Posted by: anon | Apr 24, 2012 6:22:54 PM

did the BU letter say whether they filled the slot?

Posted by: twizzlers | Apr 24, 2012 7:33:13 PM

Tulane made an offer.

Posted by: anon | Apr 24, 2012 8:12:14 PM

Marquette is filled.

general BU VAP, same as anon @ 6:22.

What are folks' experiences with offer letters? Are they getting formal ones?

Posted by: anon | Apr 25, 2012 4:32:23 PM

no-- offers by phone (informal confirmation by email).

Anyone else still waiting to hear on positions? I'm sitting on an offer and waiting to hear back from one other place. (I'm also assuming I won't get the other position, but I wish they'd just get back to me already so I could know for sure).

Posted by: VAPapp | Apr 25, 2012 6:33:26 PM

1. I did get a formal offer letter, but I think this differs.

2. Definitely still a couple schools I have not heard from, but I figured those were dings. There were two schools I wanted to hear from before making a decision, so I asked for an update. They both thankfully told me their decisions within a couple days.

Good luck everyone!

Snail mail rejection from Chicago-Kent. The letter says they have filled all VAP positions for 2012-13.

Rejection from Temple via snail mail. The letter said they'd waive my fee to apply again next year, I'm assuming they say that to everyone?

BU health VAP made an offer

Posted by: VAPapp | May 2, 2012 2:37:51 PM

I have it on strong authority that the Columbia Associates-in-Law Program has finished hiring.

Posted by: Anon | May 6, 2012 5:35:10 PM

An offer has been made (and accepted) at UConn.

Wash U has finished hiring

Are folks interested in aggregating the positions people have accepted? Such an effort may not work (people who haven't announced they're leaving professional positions not wanting to report), and certainly would be incomplete, but we may have reached a point where there's a sufficient number of fellowships/VAPs/etc that such an effort would be worthwhile.

Thoughts?

Posted by: VAP Aggregator | May 25, 2012 3:06:41 AM

I'd definitely be interested in seeing who ended up where.

Posted by: anon | May 28, 2012 9:46:18 PM

Is the same aggregator offering to take this project on? If so, you are a rockstar.

I'm interested in seeing how things shook out too, although this might be what proves there were only 3 different people on the thread all along ;) Maybe if we're emailing results to an aggregator's gmail account, though, more of the lurkers will report.

Posted by: nutmegger | May 29, 2012 11:45:34 AM

I'm willing to take a stab at it, but: 1) make no promises about being as up-to-date as with the hiring process aggregation; and 2) only want to do it if people both are going to participate and think it will be useful.

If that's the case, I'll throw something together and get started...

VAP Aggregator - I think this is a good idea and you're performing a kind and useful service. Do you want to set up an email account where people can email you privately (e.g. vapaggregator@whatever.com)?

Posted by: Anon | May 30, 2012 8:33:11 PM

Denver has made an offer, which has been accepted.

Posted by: Anon | May 30, 2012 11:40:01 PM

Anon @ 8:33 - In fact I did setup such an account (see the main body of the post above): vapaggregator (at) gmail (dot) com

I'll try to get together a list this week.

Folks should feel free to start emailing me now. For people who have previously emailed, I will not post your information unless you email me again and tell me it's ok to do so.

I imagine far fewer people on the VAP market have public profiles than do people on the entry-level TT market, so please at a minimum include:

- your name! :)
- institution you'll be at
- position (VAP/fellow/etc)
- your J.D.-granting institution (or equivalent) and degree year
- any other post-baccalaureate degrees, institutions, and years

In the interest of compiling useful information for purposes of comparison, I will not accept any submissions lacking the above information. (Which isn't really that exciting - it just means I won't add it to the spreadsheet.)

Additionally, the following is optional (but helpful!):

- previous VAPs/fellowships/etc
- clerkships
- area(s) you'll be teaching
- VAP/fellowship/etc duration (if pre-determined)

If anyone has any additional suggestions for information to collect, please let me know!

Posted by: VAP Aggregator | May 31, 2012 4:26:30 AM

I think it would be useful for future VAP applicants to know how many publications the person had (or didn't have) at the time they applied.

Posted by: anon | May 31, 2012 10:17:24 AM

Hofstra is filled.

Posted by: anon | Jun 5, 2012 12:07:35 AM

Wydick Fellowship at UC Davis has interviewed.

Posted by: anon | Jun 8, 2012 5:37:44 PM

How is the VAP aggregation going? Seems like a hard task to accomplish at this late stage, when most fellows and VAPs have stopped reading this entry.

Posted by: anon | Jun 25, 2012 12:17:13 AM

I haven't received any additional information that isn't already posted/in the spreadsheet....
